Spirulina

Introduction:

The former form of the life in water was algae. This alga contains nearly 25,000 species. Some of them are edible and some are not. The Spirulina is an edible (blue-green) alga with high proteinaceous value. The Spirulina receives the energy directly from the sun and manufactures its own food material with the help of chlorophyll, the green blood of plants. So it is considered a primary producer, from which the primary and secondary consumers receive the food. This Spirulina grows in warm and alkaline lakes. The Kanembu people, the residents of the area of Lake Chad in Africa, have been using the Spirulina as food. It is also a traditional food of Mexican people.

Spirulina as food:

Protein: Spriulina contains about sixty percent protein. This is the richest percentage of protein available in food. The Spritulina protein also contains essential amino acids. Hence, it's considered to be a complete protein. The Spirulina protein is much better than animal protein because, generally, the animal protein contains fat, cholesterol and calories. In Spirulina protein the fat content is very low: approximately five percent, and most of that is unsaturated fat.

Minerals: The Spirulina contains about seven percent of minerals. They are Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Potassium and Phosphorus.

Beta carotene: Spirulina is a good source of Beta carotene. Spirulina contains Beta carotene more than five times higher than carrots and forty times higher than Spinach.Great source of Vitamin E and Beta-carotene.

Iron: It a good and natural source of Iron. Spirulina contains more Iron than soy beans. It's a good natural source of Phycocyanin, an anti-oxidant.

Gamma- linolenic acid: A mother’s milk contains a rare essential fatty acid called Gamma- linolenic acid. It is also called as GLA. The main function of this acid is to induce proper and better growth in children. The proper quantity of this fatty acid in the body protects the body from diminishment. The Spirulina is a natural source of this fatty acid, which is very difficult to get normally from food products.

At a glance:

Ten grams of protein in Spirulina is equal to protein in fifty grams of egg and two hundred grams of milk powder.
The Iron in Spirulina is fifteen times more prevalent than in Soya beans.
Beta carotene in Spirulina is 250 times more prevalent than in carrots.

Medical properties:

  • Spirulina inhibits replication of HIV-Herpes Simplex, and the Mumps virus.
    It strengthens immunity.
  • Phycocyanin in the Spirulina builds blood strength by affecting the bone marrow.
The Spirulina acts as an anti-inflammatory due to the presence of GLA, the rare fatty acid.
  • It is beneficial to the intestinal flora.
  • It also helps the people who suffer from diabetes in its former stages.
  • It is a good food to reduce glaucoma and cataracts.
  • Some scientific studies also revealed the anti-cancerous properties of Spirulina.
It also reduces rate of hair loss.
  • The rich nutritional values of Spirulina, such as high protein content, with all its essential amino acids and vitamins, the enzymes would develop sexual potency.

Spirulina-Skin:

Spirulina helps the skin by providing deep cleaning and by providing elasticity due to the presence of Beta carotene, Vitamin E and Zinc. The fatty acid GLA protects the skin from external radiation.

Dosage:

8 to 10 grams of Spirulina is preferable for adults.

Adverse effects:

Spirulina is considered to be free of any adverse effects or bad consequences.
Sometimes, the Spirulina can cause mild diarrhea, nausea and constipation, if taken internally. The Spirulina might increase body temperature due to its high protein content.

Spirulina Drug or Food:

The drug helps the person to get rid of some diseases and some imbalance in the body. The food helps the body to stay in a natural and healthy condition. It is independent on a specific disease. But sometimes a food with good nutritional value might act as a drug.

Here, the Spirulina is a perfect and complete food, because it contains vegetable protein in higher quantities without cholesterol. It also contains all essential amino acids, minerals and vitamins. It acquired an important place due to the presence of a rare fatty acid called GLA.

Hence, due to its nutritional value being above food value, the Spirulina is considered to be a complete food. So everyone can take this Spirulina regardless of any particular disease or imbalance they may have.
